Disclaimer: Due to the wide variety of colors and grain patterns in natural, unfinished hardwoods even in the same species—your hardwood surround may or may not match the pictures of wood types shown here.To match an exact color of wood, consider ordering a raw hardwood surround and staining it to meet your needs.

Select your mantel size

Think of your mantel being similar to a picture frame. Just like the opening of the picture frame is slightly smaller than the picture, so the opening of the mantel is slightly smaller than the total size of your fireplace plus any tile or marble surrounding the firebox

1. Outer width
Measure the outer width of your fireplace, including any tile or marble surrounding the firebox—or tile or marble you plan to add around the firebox.

2. Inner width
From the sizing table above, look for a model where the inner width is slightly narrower than the outer width of your fireplace plus any tile or marble.

3. Height
Follow the same principle to fit the height: find a model where the inner height of the mantel is slightly less than the outer heigh of the fireplace plus tile.

4. Check the top shelf
Check to make sure the top shelf and outer width of the mantel won't run into obstructions such as windows or light switches.

Measurement Worksheet
Print out a worksheet to help you record and keep track of the dimensions of your fireplace. Measure twice, cut once!
